What to Look for When Choosing a Cabinetry Brand

The cabinetry industry is brimming with companies from coast to coast as well as dozens of international brands from Europe and China.  Consider these points:

Cabinetry Warranty

Cabinet Company Stability

How long have they been in business?

Box construction

What is important to you?  All wood, quality of wood, particle board (European grade only), drawer construction, hinge quality. Is the wood dried to a moisture content of 10 percent or less? The moisture content is important to minimize cracking and separating.

Box style – Framed (traditional/transitional) or frameless (contemporary) or inset (transitional)

Door Style – So many to choose from.

Finishing process & equipment

The cabinetry finish is one of the most important qualities that separate great brands from the mediocre. Is the factory climate controlled including temperature and humidity?  Do they bake on their finishes?  Do they use a clear conversion varnish to protect against stains and scratches? Finishes break down over time if the process is done incorrectly or incompletely.

Local Dealer Stability & Support

Do you have the support of a local stable kitchen dealer? How long have they been in business?  Can they do the installation or recommend an installer they guarantee? What is the warranty on the installation/contracting services? Get the warranty in writing.

Lead time for replacement or additional parts

International brands -4-6 months. U.S. brands -1-4 weeks

Custom vs. Semi Custom vs Stock

Custom - fine craftsmanship/finishes.  Semi-custom - limited options. Stock lines –one size fits all.  They are often used in rentals and builder jobs.

Remember, you don’t get what you don’t pay for.
